Sep - 11 - 08 OPERATION HURRICANE! Four-Month Undercover Operation Results in Massive Drug Round-up in Stanley
A regional drug sting coordinated between North Carolina SBI, the Stanley Police Department, and the Mount Holly Police Department with assistance from the Gaston County Sheriff, City of Gastonia Police Department, the North Carolina Department of Revenue, and the Belmont Police has been deemed a success
Operation Hurricane began promptly at 5:30 a.m. on Sept. 11, a combined effort between local and state agencies that succeeded in rounding up 27 of 31 investigated drug offenders in Gaston County. Four arrest teams and a processing team spread out throughout the region in a coordinated operation to serve the arrest warrants. Those arrested and charged were transported to a processing center set up at the Stanley Fire Department and then transported to the Gaston County Jail.
Statements:
Lt. Derek Summey with the Stanley PD:
(One of the main organizers of this sting)
“This operation lets these people know they cannot hide in neighboring jurisdictions. They live in one town and think they can operate in another and escape prosecution. We don’t have a lot of the resources that Mount Holly and the SBI have. It is useful to be able to coordinate things.”
Mount Holly Police Chief Belk:
“We got a call from the Stanley Police Department about some drug issues. We were in the middle of some investigations and pulled in the SBI. When you start bringing in other agencies, resources are magnified and then we are capable of doing something of this magnitude. And it has an impact on the entire region.”
Stanley Police Chief Heath Jenkins:
“The key to working drug operations in a small community is doing something like working with the MHPD, SBI and other agencies. Resources in a small community are stretched and it takes the agencies working together to make this happen.”
Impact: “We did a similar operation last year targeting pharmaceutical drugs. This year is street drugs. Hopefully will make some kind of impact on the community.”
Stanley Town Manager Bob Greback:
“It is unfortunate that the town of Stanley has drug traffic at this high of a level. Heroin, cocaine, crack and marijuana pose a serious threat to our residents’ health and safety. “Operation Hurricane” and others like it show our police departments’ strong commitment to preserving the health and safety of our community.”
